چکیده

In the last few years, serious cases of group A streptococcus (GAS) invasive infections have been increasing worldwide. Many questions related to this entity remain unanswered, especially those of secondary cases in close contact with an index patient. Household clusters have been described but are not numerous, and no study has yet clearly established the risk of acquiring the infection in this particular population. It is well known that GAS has the ability to spread from infected patients to close contacts, but this usually involves patients with pharyngitis and sometimes impetigo.

Fatal case of toxic shock-like syndrome due to group C streptococcus associated with superantigen exotoxin.

Group C streptococci have been reported to cause invasive disease similar to that classically associated with group A streptococcus (GAS). We describe a fatal case of toxic shock-like syndrome due to Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus. The causative organism did not possess any known GAS superantigen exotoxin genes but did show evidence of superantigen production.

Pleural empyema and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome due to Streptococcus pyogenes in a healthy Spanish traveler in Japan

Group A Streptococcus (GAS, Streptococcus pyogenes) causes invasive infections including streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) and local infections. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of an invasive GAS infection with pneumonia and pleural empyema (PE) followed by STSS (disseminated intravascular coagulation [DIC] and acute renal insufficiency) in a healthy male adult. He ...

Streptococcus pyogenes ( Group A Streptococcus )

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is synonymous with Streptococcus pyogenes, the only species within this group of β-hemolytic streptococci. GAS is one of the leading pathogenic bacteria that infects children and adolescents, and is associated with a wide spectrum of infections and disease states. Worldwide, there are estimated to be >600 million cases of GAS pharyngitis (“strep throat”) and >100 mil...

The Association between Invasive Group A Streptococcal Diseases and Viral Respiratory Tract Infections

Viral infections of the upper respiratory tract are associated with a variety of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, the group A streptococcus, including pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome, and bacteremia. While these polymicrobial infections, or superinfections, are complex, progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis of disease. Areas of inv...

Reactivation of Cytomegalovirus in a Patient with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome-Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are severe adverse cutaneous reactions to drugs. We describe the case of a 19 year old patient with SJS/TEN overlap syndrome, who developed severe interstitial pneumonia after she had received antiepileptic drugs. A cytomegalovirus infection was diagnosed by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) detection on Bronchoalveo...
